As we are too much addicted to social media. And one of the most frequently used thing is GIF. We all have little idea about GIF, it is neither a video nor a still picture. Maybe that is what we know about GIF. But most of us don’t know the full form of GIF. Well, that is not the problem. Because in this article, we are going to know the full form of GIF. Graphics Interchange Format is the full form of GIF. Let’s discuss and clarify all the doubt about GIF.

Full Information of Graphics Interchange Format (GIF):

GIF is a bitmap image format animation. It was developed by a team at the online services provider CompuServe led by American computer scientist Steve Wilhite on June 15, 1987. It has since inheriting widespread usage on the planet Wide Web due to its wide support and movability.

The format supports up to eight bits per pixel for every image, permitting one image to reference its own palette of up to 256 completely different colors chosen from the 24-bit RGB color space. It additionally supports animations and permits a separate palette of up to 256 colors for every frame. These palette limitations build GIF less appropriate for reproducing color pictures and other pictures with color gradients, but it’s well-suited for simpler images like graphics or logos with solid areas of color.

GIF pictures are compressed using the Lempel–Ziv–Welch (LZW) lossless information compression technique to cut back the file size without degrading the visual quality. This compression technique was patented in 1985. Controversy over the contract between the software or code patent holder, Unisys, and CompuServe in 1994 spurred the improvement of the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) commonplace. By 2004 all the relevant patents had expired.

The feature of storing multiple pictures in one file, accompanied by control data, is used extensively on the Web to create simple animations. The optional interlacing feature, that stores pictures scan lines out of order in such a fashion that even a partially downloaded picture was somewhat recognizable, also helped the popularity of GIF, as a user might abort the download if it was not what was needed. Facebook added support for GIF in May 2015.
Let’s know some uses of GIF. GIFs are perfect for sharp-edged line art (like logos) with a fixed number of colors. This takes advantage of the lossless of format compression, which favors flat areas of uniform color with well-defined edges. GIFs can also be used to store low-color sprite data and information for games. GIFs may be used for tiny animations and low-resolution video clips.

Portable Network Graphics (PNG) was designed as a replacement for GIF so as to avoid infringement of Unisys’ patent on the LZW compression technique. PNG offers much better compression and a lot of features than GIF, animation being the only significant exception. PNG is more enough suitable than GIF in instances wherever true-color imaging and alpha transparency are required.
